Diploma in Corporate Law and Governance – starts 6 October 2020
The Diploma in Corporate Law and Governance from the Diploma Centre provides students with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the law in relation to this interesting and changing sector, which has seen numerous changes since the introduction of the Companies Act 2014. 
The diploma focuses on typical ‘events’ during the lifetime of a corporate entity that solicitors advise on and the rules and regulations surrounding the governance of same – from company life-cycle, funding of starts up, advising shareholders,  share capital, corporate transactions, mergers and acquisitions to restructuring and company end of life – insolvency.  There is an analysis of director duties and responsibilities and the role of the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement as well as practical aspects of corporate governance. We have introduced innovative boardroom simulation modules where students will have an opportunity to gain an interactive insight into the functioning of the board, boardroom meetings and effective boardroom behaviour.

Save the date - The online Annual Litigation Update 2020 - 29 October
This annual conference is designed in collaboration with members of the Law Society’s Litigation Committee. The seminar will deal with topical issues of concern and interest including recent development in the Courts, Costs and Statute of Limitations. This annual conference on 5 November, presented by the In-house and Public Sector Committee in collaboration with Law Society Finuas Skillnet is aimed at solicitors employed in-house in the private and public sectors.

Diploma in Criminal Law returns in October 2020
Applications are now being accepted for the Diploma in Criminal Law and Practice, which commences on 9 October 2020. 
Returning for its second year, this diploma offers students in-depth exposure and practical insight into key practice areas of criminal law in Ireland, from both prosecution and defence perspectives. A core component of the course is the goal of developing the advocacy skills of those attending through interactive workshop sessions that mirror situations faced in the criminal justice process. 
The ethical and professional considerations of advising an arrested person in custody, dealing with vulnerable witnesses, and victims’ rights in a criminal trial process will be considered in detail. 
We discuss the role of the prosecution and certain State agencies in the criminal justice system, and other areas of practice will be reviewed, with a practical focus on evidential and procedural updates and coverage of emerging areas of practice such as white-collar crime and the increased impact of EU law on criminal practice.

Due to demand, the Diploma Centre is once again offering the Diploma in Judicial Skills and Decision-Making, commencing on 14 October 2020.
This diploma will provide participants with case-management leadership skills and practical training on how to run a case in any forum. It will also prepare participants for adjudicatory, tribunal, and board roles, and will explore the skills needed to preside over various forums. Practical workshops on arriving at a determination and drafting judgments and functions and duties of chairpersons of a board will be facilitated by means of case studies and role-play sessions. A module on mediation will discuss how the Mediation Act 2017 affects traditional court-based proceedings, with a particular focus on mediation in the commercial context and in family law. The diploma also features a distinct module on awareness and sensitivity training and dealing with vulnerable witnesses and clients.

Use your solicitor qualification to achieve a legal Master’s Degree
The Law Society of Ireland’s Diploma Centre is pleased to announce its well-received LLM Advanced Legal Practice is now taking applications for the September offering. 
The LLM Advanced Legal Practice is offered in association with the Northumbria Law School and is specifically designed for those who are qualified solicitors.  Uniquely the LLM provides you with the opportunity of using your solicitor qualification as a building block to achieve recognised academic qualifications.  In summary, the award requires 180 credits and your solicitor qualification already provides 120 points towards this.  A research based dissertation then makes up the remaining 60 points required.  
The LLM Advanced Legal Practice commences on 26 September 2020 and the fee is €3,400.
This LLM ALP programme will focus on legal research and coherent presentation of legal research in a written form. You will begin by attending a course induction day onsite in the Law Society of Ireland, during which the Legal Research and Study Skills unit of the programme will be introduced. This unit is not assessed but is designed to update your writing and research skills. For the remainder of the programme, students then complete a dissertation of between 15,000 to 17,000 words.
